Human Wildlife Conflict Payments Launched – 12/07/2023

The government of Kenya has launched payment of Kshs. 908 Million as compensation to family members killed, injured and their property destroyed by wildlife across the country.
The Cabinet Secretary (CS) , Ministry of Tourism ,Wildlife & Heritage – Kenya  (CS) Penina Malonza said the disbursement of the part of the claims that currently stands at approximately Kshs.2.8 billion are projected to increase to Kshs. 5.1 billion.
While launching Human Wildlife Compensation  payments in Taita Taivata town, Ms. Malonza said “the government has earmarked Ksh 800 million for the development and testing of the wildlife compensation insurance scheme”. She called on the public to contribute their views on the draft scheme that is being prepared, and expected to operate alongside the current compensation scheme at the pilot stage.
Taita Taveta county will receive Kshs. 51.5m out of the Kshs. 908m earmarked for the wildlife compensation scheme.
Those who accompanied the CS during the launch include : CS for Mining Hon Salim Mvurya, Principal Secretary(PS) for the State Department for Wildlife, Ms. Silvia Museiya, Taita Taveta County Leadership led by Governor Andrew Mwadime, Director General (DG) Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Dr. Erastus Kanga among others.
