Ministry Leadership meets Laikipia Community and Laikipia Conservancy Association Members – 09/02/2023

The Principal Secretary, State Department for Wildlife, Silvia Museiya, led a consultative meeting with Laikipia East Community and Laikipia Conservancies Association members on matters Human Wildlife Conflicts.

Laikipia County is among the many counties that are highly affected by Human Wildlife Conflicts, following the drought exacerbated by climate change.

Pastoralism, Ranching and Wildlife Conservation are the main types of land uses in this landscape.

The goal of the state department is to work with the communities to assess the challenges they face as a result of Human-Wildlife Conflicts and to explore opportunities for working together to enhance coexistence and support livelihoods.

Speaking with the Laikipia East Community about the measures the Ministry is taking to reduce Human-Wildlife Conflicts in the region, the PS reiterated the need for players in conservation to work hand in hand with communities to advance current and new conservation solutions that reflect local needs and perspectives.

The meeting had a good representation of the Laikipia Leadership led by their Governor and MPs saw the  leadership pledge to support  conservation models that  create safe, healthy spaces for wildlife to survive & thrive and those that endeavor to better the benefits to communities.

Later on, the Laikipia Conservancies Association hosted the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry Of Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage, Hon Malonza, Principal Secretary State Department for Wildlife, Silvia Museiya, Governor Laikipia County, Mr. Irungu, Ag. Director General Kenya Wildlife Service, Dr. Erastus Kanga, and other Government and elected officials at the Borana Conservancy.

They discussed Human Wildlife Conflict and the conservancies presented recommendations for embracing a  more sustainable approach towards Human Wildlife Coexistence.
