The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife – Kenya and the Media Council of Kenya are seeking to strengthen their collaboration to improve communication about wildlife conservation and human-wildlife conflict mitigation.
Both sides acknowledge the need for increased media engagement, including resource allocation for media outreach and training for journalists covering wildlife issues.
“The media plays a key role in bridging the communication gap between government efforts and public understanding, there is need for structured communications and inclusion of new media eg AI and Social media in passing the government efforts in mitigating the Human Wildlife conflicts” said CS Hon. Rebecca Miano, EGH when she held a meeting with a Media Council of Kenya delegation led by the CEO Mr David Omwoyo.
In her remarks PS Silvia Museiya acknowledged that the media plays a critical role in shaping public discourse noting that while cases of Human Wildlife Conflicts are widely reported, there is limited visibility on the compensation and mitigation measures put in place. “We need to bridge this gap and push a narrative that promotes coexistence” she said.
“Proactive engagement with the media is key. Establishing strong relationships with journalists and regularly sharing updates on conservation initiatives will help shift the narrative and ensure a balanced conversation” Reiterated Mr Omwoyo.
The end goal is to develop a structured communication framework to enhance public awareness and promote coexistence.
