The Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife Hon Rebecca Miano accompanied by the Principal Secretary State Department for Wildlife Ms Silvia Museiya opened the Wildlife joint Sector Working Group meeting this morning at the Serena Hotel.
The sector working group that holds their consultative meeting every 3rd Thursday of each quarter, brings together development partners across the wildlife sector to address key emerging issues and set out a collaborative framework for moving forward.
“There is need to re-tool wildlife conservation in order to respond to emerging issues like climate change, Kenya is custodian to diverse wildlife heritage as well as flora and fauna that we must take care of. We need to focus on ensuring synergy with the county governments as well as creating an enabling environment for investment in wildlife across the country” noted CS in her remarks.
Hon Miano acknowledged that significant progress had been made since the last meeting that was held in August, particularly in advancing the Wildlife Sector development Partners coordination, interaction and in identifying key priority issues that require our urgent actions . “These issues demand our collective focus and innovative solutions” she added.
“My priority will be to accelerate, coordinate and finance sustainability in the wildlife sector to support the government’s development agenda. I will seek broad consensus with key stakeholders in the sector to ensure that the spirit of the Bottom-up Economic Model is achieved. I will continue to consult with you as sector players on ways to deepen our collaborations and fostering synergies in order to reduce human-wildlife conflicts” CS reaffirmed.
PS Museiya appreciated the commitment of the sector Partners noting that there’s call to diversify wildlife economy going forward.
The group has identified 8 thematic areas to focus on :
- Conservation , protection and management of wildlife Biodiversity including the fight against illegal wildlife trade and consumption
- Human Wildlife Coexistence
- Wildlife conservation education, awareness and participation
- Habitat and ecosystem restoration
- Climate change mitigation and adaptation
- Conservation research and development including technology development and adoption
- Innovative financing for conservation and
- Wildlife economy
